People who oppose affirmative action; what about veterans?

Should the 'free market' decide their fate as well? Do laws that protect veterans and promotes their post service employment 'discriminate' candidates who didn't serve in the armed forces and instead have private sector experience, thus making them 'more qualified'? Do these laws mean veterans are 'weaker' and 'need' mommy government? Should the motives of a veteran seeking a leg up be questioned as lazy and asking for a hand out? I'm interested in hearing your thoughts on this.
